To make this dark cold long winter a bit more cheerful we prepared a special hike for you to an underrated destination west of Budapest, the wine region of Mór!

Mór is primarily famous for its white wines, especially the variety called ‘ezerjó’ there is much more to see around as the small town is nested just underneath the steep hills of Vértes which is dotted with plenty of natural and medieval sights, ruins and castles. The area is traditionally inhabitated by the German minority who were famous for their versatile craftmanship, so no wonder that one of the natives received a Nobel price in physics just last year!
On our one-day hike we climb up to the fortress of Csókakő to get a stunning view on the diverse landscape, continue in the forests of Vértes along scenic ridges and cliffs and eventually descend to the center of Mór to learn a bit about the famous local wine culture 😉

The length of the hike: 15 km, 400 meters ascend and descend
Duration of the hike: approx. 5 hours
Difficulty: This hike is doable for everyone!
Schedule:
9h20 – Meeting at Kelenföld railway station, right at the main entrance, the stairs that go down to the underpass (address: Etele tér, there is also a Pizza King next to the entrance)
10h50 – Arriving at Csókakő railway station

19h00 – taking the train from Mór to Budapest

As the summer heat is slowly over and the season of grape harvesting is ushered in, we invite you for a charming late September hike to the world famous wine region of Tokaj!
Our main target this year is the spectacular mountain lake of Tarcal famous for its crystal clear water and peculiar location, nested in an abandoned mine pit.
The entire Tokaj wine region was granted the world heritage title, it is the unique white dessert wine that has brought world fame to Tokaj but there’s much more to try and see around this little Northeastern Hungarian town!
Tokaj is situated in the Northeastern part of Hungary, 230 km away from Budapest on the Eastern slopes of the Zemplén mountain range, upon the confluence of rivers Tisza and Bodrog. This odd combination of the volcanic soil, the wide damp floodplains and the mild climate is what made Tokaj an excellent wine producing area. Throughout the centuries, these wine hills generated an enormous wealth for their owners and the local merchants as the consumers were not only Hungarian aristocrats but also royalties from all across Europe, explaining why it is called the king of wines and the wine of kings ‘Vinum Regum Rex Vinorum’. We will find the pertaining historic spots along the cobbled streets of Tokaj!
Our 4 hour long hike will start immediately with the famous mountain lake and the viewpoint over the village. From Tarcal we will climb up to the top of the Tokaj hill (514 metres) which juts deep inside the Great Hungarian Plain, providing us with a stunning view. Once conquering the summit we’ll descend to the town of Tokaj and take a look at some of its old monuments and wine cellars where you will have the chance to taste either the must (grape juice) or the famous Tokaj wine.
The length of the hike: 9 km, 420 meters ascend and descend
Duration of the hike: approx. 4 hours
Difficulty: This hike is doable for everyone but it lacks shadowed places, so bring your hat, sunglasses, sun cream and water bottle!

7h10 – Meeting at Keleti railway station, right at the main entrance of the main building, on the small stairs, under the clock and the statues (address: Baross Gábor tér)
10h30 – Arriving at Tarcal railway station

16h00 – Wine cellar visiting in the old town of Tokaj
19h50 – taking the train from Tokaj to Budapest
22h30 – Arrival back to Budapest

This time we invite you to a well-known but rarely visited hidden gem of Hungary🇭🇺, the famous Szekszárd wine region🍷! We’ll pass through its labyrinth-like, carved paths along lush vineyards, old wine cellars and fragrant forests🌲 on the hilltops until we descend to the scenic lake🏞 of Szálka, the enjoy some beach sports🏄‍♂.
Szekszárd is a small town of 30 thousand residents in the southwest of Hungary, world famous for its local red wines🍷, namely the Kadarka and the Bull’s blood 🦬(Szekszárdi bikavér) which was praised allegedly even by Pope Pius IX.
The surrounding hills around Szekszárd are covered by yellow loess, this peculiar sand-like soil which is really easy to carve – for wine cellars, but it is also sinking under the weight of vehicles, turning all the road network into a romantic labyrinth.
On our hike we will roam between the old shabby buildings of winemakers🏚, climb up to the top of the hill area, to a fancy lookout tower👀, visit an authentic local wine cellar where we can also taste the wine🍷, and after a few kilometers hike through the forests, we’ll descend to the lake of Szálka to a scenic beach resort 🏖where we can also have a decent lunch.

The cold winter days are gone and finally we are back with our first hike of the year. It was a long time since we have seen each other, but we could not be more excited. If you are ready for a new adventure, come and join us on our hike to the famous Szalajka Valley!

The Szalajka Valley is perhaps one of the most attractive and best-known hiking destinations in the country, with Hungary’s steepest railway track without rack and pinion, with gradients of over 41% in places. 🚂

The most beautiful and most popular place of the Szalajka Valley is the 17-metre-high Fátyol waterfall, which has outstanding nature conservation value.

To add some more beuty, after the waterfall we will climb up to one of the highest peaks of the country, from where we will have an excellent panorama of the area. On the way to the top we will pass through an ancient cave called the Cave of the Standing Stone, where once cavemen actually lived.

And if it is still not enough we will crown the day with a typical hungarian lunch 🥘 and finish with summer bobsleighing. 🛷 It’s gonna be fun! 😁

  • the hike distance is 13 km, with some steep parts however someone who regularly do sports can easily manage it
  • April is always tricky, so bring some warm clothes or rain jacket, you never know what to expect

Hello guys, I am a sport lover, especially football and tennis which I pursue from childhood, but apart from these I love hiking and currently I am doing KÉK Túra in multiple-day parts. I come from a sporty and quite active family, so I have explored some of Hungary’s best hiking places. I graduated in Tourism and Hospitality at Corvinus and am doing my Masters there. Apart from that I am part of the UEFA Europa League Final organizing team.
