🏔️ Exploring the Mátra and the Palóc Highlands

The Mátra is renowned for its natural beauty and is home to Hungary’s highest peak, Kékestető. This mountain range is celebrated for its dense forests and rich biodiversity. The region is the traditional home of the Palóc people, an ethnic subgroup of Hungarians known for their distinct dialect and preserved folk traditions.

Historically, the Palóc population spans across Northern Hungary and Southern Slovakia. In the 2011 census, while most identified primarily as Hungarian, several thousand people specifically highlighted their Palóc cultural heritage as a primary identity marker in the regional counties. They are famous for their “kontyolt” houses and intricate embroidery, adding a unique cultural layer to the wild landscape we will explore. 🎓🌲
