Hello Hikers! ππ
In the midst of the summer heat, we are inviting you to the most scenic Hungarian river beach, the Tisza riverbank at Tokaj! πποΈ To max out the experience, we’ll also hike to the peak of the Tokaj mountain ποΈ and descend down to the largest, medieval cellar of the world-famous wine region! π·π°
The entire Tokaj wine region was granted the world heritage title ππ , it is the unique white dessert wine that has brought world fame to Tokaj but thereβs much more to try and see around this little Northeastern Hungarian town! ποΈπ
Tokaj is situated in the Northeastern part of Hungary, 230 km away from Budapest on the Eastern slopes of the ZemplΓ©n mountain range, upon the confluence of river Tisza and Bodrog. ππΊοΈ This odd combination of the volcanic soil, the wide damp floodplains, and the mild climate is what made Tokaj an excellent wine-producing area. ππ±π· Throughout the centuries, these wine hills generated an enormous wealth for their owners and the local merchants as the consumers were not only Hungarian aristocrats but also royalties from all across Europe, explaining why it is called the king of wines and the wine of kings βVinum Regum Rex Vinorumβ. ππ We will find the pertaining historic spots along the cobbled streets of Tokaj! ποΈποΈ
Our 4-hour long hike will start immediately with a stunning mountain quarry lake and the viewpoint over the village. From Tarcal we will climb up to the top of the Tokaj hill (514 metres) which juts deep inside the Great Hungarian Plain, providing us with a scenic view. ππΈ Once conquering the summit weβll descend to the town of Tokaj and continue directly to the charming sandy river beach where we can also have our lunch and do some watersports. ππ½οΈπββοΈ Before taking the Budapest train π, we take a look at the old monuments of the downtown and visit a well-known wine cellar where you will have the chance to taste and buy either the must (grape juice) or the famous Tokaj wine. ππ·
π₯Ύ The length of the hike: 13 km, 420 meters ascend and descend
β° Duration of the hike: approx. 5 hours
