🌿 Hello Hikers! 🌿
The summer is gone, leaves are turning brown, autumn crocuses are blooming, this is the high season of hiking in Hungary and we invite you to a less known part of a famous trekking area of Hungary, the Eger wine region 🍷.
Eged is the name of the peak towering over the city and the vineyards of Eger, it is a popular spot among paragliders and is also boasting a scenic view over the western Bükk region, though the number of visitors has decreased since the lookout tower is out of use.
On the way to the Eged summit the hike trail passes by some spectacular mine-pits and the mysterious pre-historic hivestones (kaptárkövek) which are emblematic to the area: it is still not proven scientifically who and when carved these caves into the soft volcanic ashes but they definitely had vital importance for this ancient civilisation, either the Celts, or some of the many steppic cultures.
At the end of the hike our group descends to the oldtown of Eger and to the famous wine cellar streets, where you’ll have the opportunity to check the world-famous local wine, the bull’s blood (bikavér) and also to get yourself a decent dinner. 🍴🍷
📏 The length of the hike: 24 km, 700 meters ascend and descend
⏱️ Duration of the hike: approx. 7 hours
💪 Difficulty: This hike is rather easy and doable for everyone but don’t forget to bring your proper trekking shoes! 👟
