Mystic Trails & Thermal Bliss: Winter Hike to Moonlight Gorge and Leányfalu Spa

 Hello Hikers! 

Here we are in Winter, and while most usual hiking spots may have lost their charm, we’ve crafted an extraordinary itinerary, that showcases the best attractions of the mountains above Szentendre.

The Moonlight Gorge is one of the most mysterious places in the Pilis-Danube Bend region. It features ravines, cliffs, and mining pits, and according to myths, hosts the graves of ancient rulers. While we can’t confirm the myths, we know its volcanic stones were used by Romans as building materials, and it’s an absolutely scenic trekking spot!

We’ll start our trip by conquering the famous gorge, climbing to the lookout tower at the very top of the hill, and descending to the Lajos-spring and the Dömörkapu waterfall, which might be frozen by mid-January!

After a short break in Pilisszentlászló, a traditional ethnic village, we’ll continue through the hilly winter forests eastward to the Danube River. In Leányfalu, there will be plenty of restaurants for lunch before we finish the day with a relaxing dip in the open-air thermal pools of the local bath.

 Length of the hike: 20 km, 700m ascent, 800m descent
 Duration: Approx. 6 hours
Difficulty: Doable for everyone, but don’t forget proper trekking shoes!

 Schedule:

8:10: Meeting at Batthyány tér HÉV station (coordinates: 47.506416, 19.039415)

9:00: Changing to a bus at Pomáz station 

9:30: Arrival at the trailhead 

13:00: Short break in Pilisszentlászló 

16:00: Descent to Leányfalu, lunch and thermal bath 

19:27: Bus from Leányfalu to Budapest 

20:55: Arrival at Batthyány tér
