🏔️ Where are we going?

The northeastern county of Nógrád is famous for its extraordinary number of medieval castles. Two of the most intact ones are just a few kilometers apart above the regional capital Salgótarján:
🏰 Salgó Castle & 🏰 Somoskő Castle

On our hike, we’ll:

Slowly climb to ancient volcanic peaks 🌋

Walk through the scented pine forests of the Medves Plateau 🌲✨

Visit the famous abandoned railway tunnel of Somoskőújfalu 🚇🌳

Enjoy epic panoramic views from Salgó Castle 📸😍

End the day in Salgótarján with great food & drinks in a cozy local inn 🍲🍻

📏 Hike details:

Distance: 18 km 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Elevation: 420 m ascent / 420 m descent ⛰️

Duration: ~7 hours 🕖

Difficulty: doable for everyone, but requires basic fitness 💪🙂

🥾 Hike begins!

14:00 – Reaching the village & Somoskő Castle 🏰
15:00 – Ascending to the high tower of Salgó Castle 🏰⬆️
18:00 – Descending to Salgótarján city center – Dinner time 🍽️
20:26 – Boarding the returning train 🚆
22:47 – Arrival back to Budapest Keleti 🌃
