Autumn is definitely the high season for hiking in Hungary, the temperature, soil moisture and canopy colours are perfectly optimal!
This time we’ll guide you to the Bükk mountains and Eger, the famous historical (and wine-producing) town of Northern Hungary.
Our main destination is the fabulous Ottoman-era bath of Eger, but before getting there we’ll be roaming through the colourful forests above the city and pass by the Bélapátfalva monastery, one of the most scenic medieval buildings of Central Europe.
The medieval abbey is situated at the bottom of the mountain, hence it is a common starting point for hike routes in the area, including the famous Blue trail which goes across the whole country connecting the most remarkable natural sights. We will also take the Blue trail for our 11-kilometre-long but a rather easy hike down to the castle ruins of Szarvaskő, a famous viewpoint over the gorge of the Eger-Patak stream.
The Cistercian monastery of Bélapátfalva – this Romanesque building is one of the best preserved medieval abbeys of Central Europe nested in a scenic mountainous landscape. We are also passing by the towering cliffs of Szarvaskő before continuing our journey to Eger where we discover the charming cobbled old city centre, taste some local wines and dip in the hot tubes of the scenic Ottoman bath.
The main building of the spa is slightly more than 400 years old, it was constructed during the Turkish occupation of the country and boasts not only several warm water pools but also a wellness department with saunas and other facilities.
